ROTHERMEL, Terry William Passed away on August 6, 2022 in Concord, MA, at the age of 84, in the company of his wife and children. Terry leaves his loving wife of 59 years, Kathryn (Kitsy) McMath Rothermel; and his siblings, Gaynelle (Winograd) and Dennis Rothermel. He is survived by his three children, Holly, Jeffrey and Greta; and their spouses Michael Dettelbach, Naomi Neville, and Matthew Ruppert. He is also survived by his adored grandchildren, Zoe, Claire and Rachel Dettelbach, Gwendolyn and Mary Rothermel, and Alexander, Timothy, and Jacob Ruppert. Terry was born in South Bend, IN and was the elder son of Russell and Adella Rothermel. He graduated from John Adams High School, where his father was the principal, in 1956. He graduated from Yale University with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1960, before going on to the Sloan School of MIT, where he received his PhD in Managment. It was while in graduate school that he met his beloved wife, Kitsy, and they settled in Concord in 1968. Terry worked for 27 years as a management consultant for Arthur D. Little specializing in environmental issues; he had a special interest in pollution control and wastewater treatment. He has remained enthusiastically involved in the ADL Alumni Association. Terry was also deeply committed to public service; he was passionate about Concord and served the town in many capacities. He was on both the Public Works Commission and Housing Authority, and served two terms as a Selectman from 1982-88. After retirement, he remained involved in town politics in many advisory capacities, advocating for affordable housing and helping to found the Concord Housing Foundation. Terry was a loyal parishioner at the First Parish of Concord for over 50 years, serving on its Standing Committee, a Ministerial Search Committee, and various other committees. A First Parish highlight was his unexpected starring role as Grub in "Grub," a musical performed in 2017. Terry played baseball and football when he was younger, but golf became his passion, and he enjoyed many happy rounds at the Concord Country Club and other courses around the country. Although a Yankees fan as a child, he quickly adopted Boston sports teams and was an avid Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots fan. Taking his children fishing and boating at his parent's home on Pleasant Lake in Michigan was a real joy, and led to annual summer family reunions in Boothbay Harbor, Maine and Martha's Vineyard. He and Kitsy loved to travel and enjoyed many wonderful trips, the highlight being a 50th wedding anniversary cruise through the Galapagos Islands with all of their children and grandchildren. Terry was a thoughtful and reserved person, with a strong sense of purpose and responsibility and a dry sense of humor. He spoke with conviction on issues about which he was passionate and was a respected advisor to friends and colleagues, and particularly to his children. He had a strong sense of integrity and instilled this in those who loved him. Above all else, he enjoyed spending time with his family—he was a loving husband and father and a doting and beloved grandfather. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Terry's life at First Parish, 20 Lexington Road, Concord Center, on Thursday, August 18th at 10 am. A reception will follow.
