David Robert Schoen

Mar. 23, 1944 - Apr. 25, 2011

SOUTH BEND - David Robert Schoen, 67, of South Bend, died Monday morning, April 25, 2011, in South Bend Memorial Hospital. Born in Detroit, MI, March 23, 1944, to the late Robert Thomas and Mary E. (Yenny) Schoen, David was only three months old when his biological father died bravely in WW II. His mother then eventually married his father's best friend, Robert Schoen, who raised David for most of his life.

David was also very close to his grandmother, Thelma Baker, who has also preceded him in death. David was a United States Army veteran (serving from 1962-1965) and was a member of The America Legion. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, watching sports on TV, war movies and the History Channel.

David is survived by his sons, David (Brenda) Schoen of South Bend, Kent Schoen of Loudenville, OH, and Chad (Jackie) Schoen of Mishawaka; his six grandchildren, David Stair, Alix Sheler, Makayla Schoen, Nathan Schoen, Ashley Schoen and Emily Schoen; and his two brothers, Dan and Terry Schoen.

McGann Hay and American Cremation Society are in charge of arrangements. After cremation, burial will be later at Fort Custer National Cemetery in MI. No services are planned at this time. Donations may be made in David's memory to The Center for the Homeless, 813 S. Michigan St., South Bend, IN 46601, which was very helpful to David in a time of need; or to the American Diabetes Association , 1701 North Beauregard Street, Alexandria, VA 22311.
