Robert John Schohl

Robert John Schohl

Jan. 22, 1944 - May 7, 2014

Robert J. Schohl, a lifelong resident of South Bend, passed away at age 70 on May 7, 2014, after battling multiple forms of cancer.

A graduate of John Adams High School (Class of '62), Bob had a deep and broad appreciation for the arts in general and was an active practitioner of photography. Over the years, his work was featured in various shows at venues such as the Colfax Cultural Center along with leading art galleries around town. Selections of his photographs were made available in greeting card form, as well.

Bob was known for his generosity in passing along many of his favorite photos to friends and acquaintances, that is to say, he shared his own gift for photography by giving gifts of his photos. His primary subject areas included exotic flowers, dramatic cloud formations, and distinctive architecture, mainly classic residences found throughout the South Bend area.

A precocious aficionado of jazz (starting at age eight), Bob made the trumpet his instrument of choice, with his primary influence being Louis Armstrong. Later he added the piano and played in several group settings as a young man.

Bob also developed an encyclopedic knowledge of jazz history, which included, from memory, recording dates and personnel on a vast number of records. He was a constant presence on the local scene, beginning in the 1960's as a loyal patron of the Hide & Seek jazz club, and most recently at the downtown jazz club Trio's.

During the latter stages of his illness, Bob was attended to and comforted by close friends Don Lerman and Linda Regelean, both of South Bend. He is survived by his brother Bill, who lives in Los Angeles. Memorial services are pending. Palmer Funeral Home-River Park is assisting the family.
