William “Bill” R. Kern, 69, residing in South Bend, Indiana passed away at 5:45am on Thursday, May 14, 2020 at home.  He was born on January 20, 1951 in Elkhart, Indiana to William Russell Kern and Katherine J. O’Brien Kern. 

Bill lived in Elkhart until his high school years and then moved to South Bend.  He graduated from John Adams High School.  Bill served twelve years in the United States Air Force.  He worked for Martin’s Supermarkets for 12 years.

Bill’s hobbies included reading and computers.  He attended Faith United Methodist Church in Goshen. He loved watching sporting events, the University of Notre Dame, Kansas City Chiefs and Chicago White Sox.

Bill is survived by his sister, Betty Plaisted of South Bend; and nieces and nephews, Andrew Kern of South Bend, Brandon Kern of South Bend, Scott Kern of Portland, Maine, Theresa Osborne of Gray, Maine, Kathy Hagan-Greer of Bristol, Jason Plaisted of Pensacola, Florida and Amanda Sands of Bremen. Along with his parents, one sister, Helen Margaret Kern; and his brother, Patrick O’Brien Kern, preceded him in death. 

Graveside services will be held at 11:00am Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at Riverview Cemetery, South Bend.  Pastor John Hogsett from Faith United Methodist Church will officiate.  Palmer Funeral Home-River Park is assisting the family with arrangements.
