NILES - Joseph M. Slater, 85, of Niles, formerly of Berrien Springs, went to see Jesu s
on August 6, 2008, at Lakeland Specialty Hospital in Berrien Center. Friends are
invited to visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 8, at Allred Funeral
Home in Berrien Springs, and to leave online messages for the family at
www.allredfuneralhome.com . Memorial contributions may be made to Great Love Outreach
Women's (GLOW) Ministry, P. O. Box 232, Buchanan, MI 49107. A celebration of his
life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, August 23, at the Faith Victory Fellowship in
Buchanan, Michigan. Inurnment will be in Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles. Joseph was
born June 25, 1923, in South Bend, Indiana, the son of Joseph and Adeline (Knapp)
Slater. He was a veteran of World War II, having served his country with the United
States Army. He retired from Niles Steel Tank, where he had been employed as a
welder. At home, he was a tinkerer and fixer of many things. He was a good husband,
a great dad, and always quick with a smile and a joke. He is survived by his wife of
nearly 64 years, Grace, whom he married on January 27, 1945, in Bridgewater,
Somerset, England; three daughters, Bea Mary Warren of Berrien Springs, Ruth Ann
Slater of Niles, and Cathie Jo Tanner of Berrien Springs; four grandchildren, Amanda
Nichols, Joanna Shembarger, Michael Kuhlman, and Joseph Tyler Kuhlman; four great-
grandchildren, William Nichols V, David Nichols, Caleb Obstfeld, and Devon Obstfeld;
and his sister, Ruth Boltz of Dunkirk, Indiana. He was preceded in death by a
daughter, Rebecca Slater; and two grandsons, Aaron Obstfeld and Nathanial Camp.
