Gary A Vargo - Class Of 1973 VIEW PROFILE

Gary A Vargo

Gary A. Vargo, 63, of South Bend died unexpectedly at 1:14 a.m. Tuesday, May 23rd in Memorial Hospital. Gary was born September 21, 1953 in South Bend, and was a lifetime area resident. He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Vargo, and two infant sons. On March 27, 1982 he married Cheryl Greulich, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Grant Vargo (Jessica), Emma Vargo and Jace Vargo; his mother and stepfather, Geri and Mike Hillebrand; and brother, Gene Vargo (Viv).

Gary was the Public Works Safety Coordinator for the City of South Bend, and was the recipient of a key to the city upon retirement in 2015.

The epitome of a truly devoted family man, Gary was happiest when in the company of his family and close friends. He loved annual family sojourns to Disney World, but also enjoyed hopping in his truck alongside his wife for a relaxing country drive, or an antique-seeking adventure. His wife relied upon and was deeply grateful for his steadfast love, devotion and support throughout their fun-filled marriage. They were true soulmates, and one was rarely seen without the other. His children could always count on his loving support, whether offering advice and solutions, listening to concerns, or fixing broken vehicles. He was ready and willing to do whatever it took to ensure the well-being and happiness of others. Gary was a man tremendously loved by his family, and the void created by this loss will be forever deep and profound. Comfort is found in remembering his love of the Lord, of him stepping outside at night to pray under the stars.

Gary deeply loved his wife and children, his extended family and friends. He will be remembered for his integrity, friendly outgoing personality, ready smile, humor and most especially, his tender heart. His laughter filled a room, his presence filled our hearts and lives. He was, indeed, as his nickname implies, a “beautiful man”.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 30th from 4 until 7 p.m., with funeral services on Wednesday, May 31st at 11:00 a.m., both at Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street in South Bend. Committal services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Gary may be made to Lustgarten Foundation, 1111 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, New York 11714 or www.lustgarten.org, for pancreatic cancer research. Family and friends may leave email condolences at www.welsheimer.com.
