Garnetta is survived by her husband of 62 years, Donald Brown. She is also survived by her children, Douglas Brown, Charlotte Brown and David Brown, and her only grandchild, Aliceson Cash.

Garnetta was born and raised in South Bend, Ind. Upon graduating from high school, she went to nursing school in Ann Arbor, Mich. After meeting Donald, she gave up nursing school to move to Champaign where she completed a B.S. in physical education and health and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Illinois. Garnetta retired in 1997 from the state of Illinois, DCFS, as a case-review administrator.

Garnetta was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, a parishioner of St. Matthew Catholic Church, and involved in many other voluntary and organizational programs throughout her life.
