MISHAWAKA - Carlton Ephraim Kindig, Jr., 79, residing in Mishawaka, IN; passed away at 12:05 p.m. Monday, December 23, 2013 in his home. He was born August 20, 1934 in South Bend, a son of Carlton E. & Ruth M. Fortin Kindig, and has remained a lifelong resident of this community.

On August 21, 1954 at River Park Methodist Church in South Bend, he was united in marriage to Sylvia S. Stephanoff. He is survived by his loving wife Sylvia, of 59 years. Also surviving are four daughters, Melissa Fries of Soddy Daisy, TN; Andrea (John) Alexander of Mishawaka, IN; and Melinda (Tom) Davis of Mishawaka, IN; Kristina (Josh) Stockbridge of South Bend, IN; two sons, Carlton E. (Brenda) Kindig III, and James Kindig, both of Mishawaka, IN. Also surviving Carlton are his six grandchildren, Miranda Fulmer, Christopher Kindig, Kallie Kindig, Desiree Kindig, Carlton James Stockbridge, and Alyxandrea Williams and three great grandchildren Jake, Grace and Amyah. He is also survived by his sister, Virginia Rearick of South Bend, IN; and his brother, Thomas Kindig of Hillsdale, MI.

Carlton was preceded in death by his sisters Betty Wachs; and Joan Erickson.

Carlton proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1957-1963. He retired in 1999 as Senior Foreman from Rockwell Automation Dodge, following 44 years of faithful service. Carlton's greatest joy was spending time with his family. They enjoyed going to northern Michigan to the summer cottage. Everyone knew his favorite time of the year was winter; he enjoyed snowmobiling. However, on a nice sunny day he would not pass on a good day of fishing along with his yearly visit to the Michigan International Speedway for the NASCAR race. His favorite football teams were the Colts, Bears and Notre Dame.

Services will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday at the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Graveside services and burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
