Dr. Dick Bruce Lawitzke

CARMEL - Dr. Dick B. "Coach" Lawitzke passed peacefully at home at the age of 84 on November 11, 2010. He was born in Argos, Indiana to Izetta and Otto Lawitzke.

Dick grew up in South Bend, Indiana graduating from John Adams High School as a member of the city championship basketball team. This was a precursor to a life long love of sports, creating scholarship opportunities which would carry him through a collegiate career. He graduated from Humboldt State College in 1950. It was while attending he met the enduring love of his life, Millicent McVay.

Marrying upon graduating, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and an introduction to the Monterey Peninsula where the adventurous couple would eventually make their home. Dick's first employment in Carmel was as the Superintendent/Principal/teacher/bus driver of Carmelo Elementary School from 1956 to 1958. His passion for teaching and sports led him to hold a variety of positions in the Carmel Unified School District. At Carmel High he taught a broad scope of classes, but most memorably as drivers education instructor. It was from his time spent teaching drivers ed that he developed an expertise leading him to achieve his Post Doctoral degree with an emphasis in drivers education in 1974.

His public persona was most recognizable as "Coach". During his tenure he coached multiple championship teams in basketball and football as well as holding the position of Athletic Director.

Dick retired from Carmel High School in 1988 to travel with his beloved wife. During his retirement he learned to cross-stitch which he gave away generously to friends and was recognized as Best of Show at the Fair.

He leaves his wife, Millicent; children, Loree Burroughs, Amy Consul (Joe), Milton "Mo" Lawitzke; grandchildren, Travis Fluegge, Edward Lee Lawitzke, Caylen and Ian Burroughs, Margo and Nina Consul. Dick was preceded in death by their daughter, Heidi Fluegge.

A Celebration of His Life will be held at Sunset Center, November 17, 2010 at 4:00 p.m.
