John Eugene Gatchell

John E. ''Jack'' Gatchell, 72, of Catherwood Drive, South Bend, Ind., passed away after an extended illness at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 2, in the Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born on June 20, 1927, in South Bend, to Clarence C. and Edna (Unger) Gatchell.

Mr. Gatchell was a 20-year employee of the Oliver Corporation, and was the retired owner of Gatchell Tree Service which he operated for 23 years. He was a World War II Navy veteran and a member of VFW Post 360.

On Feb. 5, 1949, in Mishawaka, Ind., he married Carolyn J. Bushong, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Terry (Jim) Liepold of Lake Wawasee, Ind.; two grandsons, Matthew and Todd Liepold; and by five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, James L. Gatchell, who passed away on March 23, 1983.

Private memorial services will be held on Wednesday in the family home. There will be no visitation. The St. Joseph Funeral Home, 1827 E. Ireland Road, is in charge of arrangements.
