Dare Nestlerode

Dare L. Nestlerode

Leesburg, FL (formerly of South Bend) - Dare Lawrence Nestlerode was born in South Bend, Indiana on November 28, 1927, to Boyd and Lucille Nestlerode. He attended John Adams High School, and the University of Notre Dame for a semester until being drafted into WWII and then the Korean Conflict, during which he earned a Purple Heart. After returning home, he attended Indiana State University, receiving his Master of Education.

Dare married the former Charmane Franklin on June 11, 1950, and they had three children. They also bore two stillborn children, John Joseph and an infant girl. Charmane preceded him in death in 2014. Surviving children are Jill Shank (Fred), Joel Nestlerode, and Jamie Anderson (Darryl), with whom he made his home before passing. He is also survived by grandchildren, Michelle Davis, Ernest Shank, Amanda Nestlerode, Jeremy Nestlerode and Bryanna Craig; as well as great grandchildren, Morgan Davis, Wynn Davis, and Flynn Nestlerode.

Dare worked for the South Bend Community School Corporation until retiring. He worked with students at Central High School, where he taught auto mechanics; and John Adams High School, Riley High School, and Clay High School as a Guidance Counselor and eventually becoming Director of Guidance.

Upon moving to the Eastgate neighborhood when his children were young, Dare joined the Evangelical Covenant Church on Edison Road in South Bend. He was very involved with the church community, serving as deacon and lay pastor when the church was between pastors.

After retiring, Dare followed his sister, Lois Coney Woodburn, and made his winter home in Bonfire Mobile Village in Leesburg, Florida. He loved his winter home, explaining that it reminded him of South Bend without the snow. The residents there worked very diligently to get approval to make the park resident owned. He was proud of that accomplishment.

Dare enjoyed gardening, taking photos, listening to Big Band music and working on any automobile. He worked endlessly at everything he did until he perfected it and could say he tried his best. Dare was a longtime member of the South Bend Masonic Lodge #45.

Dare had some extraordinary friendships with his mentor James Ingram, and his friends Kenny Maine and Tom Emmons. Dare traveled to Lock Haven, Pennsylvania with his family to enjoy a yearly reunion of his beloved extended family on his maternal side. He also enjoyed close relationships with his many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Dare will be interred with full military honors at 10:00 am Saturday, September 25, 2021, at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola alongside his beloved wife, Charmane. Palmer Funeral Home – Hickey Chapel, South Bend, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Online condolences may be left for the Nestlerode family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
