Phyllis Jean Murphy

Phyllis J. Murphy, 78, of South Bend, IN, passed away following a lengthy illness at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, December 1, 2005, in Saint Joseph Care Center-West.

She was born on November 1, 1927, to the late Irvin and Clarice (Rowe) Whitehead in Mishawaka, IN, and had lived most of her life in South Bend. Mrs. Murphy retired in 1983 from Rockstroh Insurance Agency after 15 years of employment.

On March 23, 1973, as Phyllis J. Spitzer, she married Mark T. Murphy in South Bend, IN. He died on August 19, 2002.

She is survived by one daughter, Vicky (husband William) Claycomb of South Bend, IN; two sons, James (wife Sarah) Spitzer of Rocky Mount, VA, and Kenny (wife Toni) Spitzer of Myrtle Beach, SC; two stepdaughters, Patricia (husband Harold) Hunt of Palatine, IL, and Lynne (husband Joseph) Dzierla of South Bend, IN; 10 grandchildren, Amy Hunt-Rieman, Kelly Meehan, Christie Pozgai, Tonya (husband Jamie) Kuhl, Mark (wife Laurie) Hunt, Amber (husband Nic) Pannucci, Lori Spitzer, Scott Spitzer, Mallary Dzierla and Shelby Dzierla; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Lucille Melady of South Bend, IN; and one brother, Irvin (wife Shirley) Whitehead Jr. of Granger, IN.

Mrs. Murphy was a member of Corpus Christi Parish.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, December 5, 2005, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 6, 2005, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, with Rev. Christopher Young officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
