JEAN (CLARK) MACQUIVEY

May 14, 1928 - Jan. 4, 2009
SOUTH BEND - Jean L. (Clark) MacQuivey, 80, residing in South Bend, IN, passed away at 10:10 a.m. Sunday, January 4, 2009 at Hospice House, Elkhart, IN.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Joseph A. (Joe) MacQuivey, daughter, Karen MacQuivey of Seattle, Washington, son, Scott (Stacy) MacQuivey of Mishawaka, IN, and grandsons, Matthew and Joey, and extended family of step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jean was born May 14, 1928 to the late William J. and Jennie (Anderson) Clark in East Cleveland, OH. In 1941, the family moved to South Bend from Lyndhurst, OH. Jean graduated from John Adams High School in 1946 and Indiana University, Bloomington, in 1950. While at IU, Jean was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority. Years later, when her children were grown, Jean served the sorority as a District Alumni Chairman, overseeing alumni chapters throughout Indiana.

On July 29, 1950, in Sunnyside Presbyterian Church in South Bend, Jean married her college sweetheart Joe, who remained her steadfast partner for life.

Jean and Joe developed the business his father had started, Mac's Machines, a coin-operated phonograph business. In 1969, in South Bend, they opened a record store, Mac's Record Rack, next to the old River Park Theatre. Jean and Joe tried to retired in 1978 and traveled to the British Isles and Greece. But they were never ones to rest for long. They joined several friends and opened Naturally Wood, an unfinished furniture store in Town and Country Shopping Center in Mishawaka, IN from 1981 - 1990. Jean worked side by side with Joe for their entire lives and her family remained foremost in her life. In later years, Jean became active in volunteer activities with GFWC-the Progress Club, AAUW, Art League and the former Service Guild. She was a longtime member of Sunnyside Presbyterian Church.

A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. today, January 10, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend. Rev. James B. Miller will officiate. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637 or Sunnyside Presbyterian Church, 115 South Frances Street, South Bend, IN 46617. Jean often said she planned to grow old with grace, wit and charm. We think she did a pretty good job of it.
