SOUTH BEND - Ona Nancy Sigrist, 79, residing in South Bend, IN passed away at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at The Hearth @ Juday Creek, Granger, IN.
She was born on August 23, 1931 in South Bend, IN to Charles and Effie (French) Apelgreen. On July 19, 1969, in South Bend, she married David R. Sigrist who preceded her in death on February 4, 1984. Mrs. Sigrist is survived by her daughter, Debra (Don) Jerue of South Bend, IN; five grandchildren, Holly (Christopher) O'Brien of North Aurora, IL, Ryan Beck of Terre Haute, IN, Kyle Beck of Elgin Air Force Base, Fort Walton Beach, FL, Ashley Jerue of South Bend, IN and Nicholas Jerue of South Bend, IN; two great grandchildren, Skylar and Riley.
She is also survived by four sisters, Kaye Schieman of South Bend, IN, Peg Vosburg of Niles, MI, Dessa (Walter) Frisbie of South Bend, IN and Essie Shipley of Walla Walla, WA; a brother, Charles (Wava) Apelgreen of Lakeville, IN and her first husband, Gene Ross of South Bend, IN. She was preceded in death by a sister, Roberta (Orlie) Davis and brother, William Eckhart and brothers-in-law, Jerry Schieman, Ralph Vosburg and Jack Shipley. Mrs. Sigrist was a lifelong area resident and graduated from Adams High School.
She worked for Uniroyal Corporation as a stenographer retiring in 1986 after thirty-seven plus years. She retired in 2002 after sixteen years as a cook for the South Bend Community School Corporation. She was a member and past president of the Uniroyal Ladies Club and a member of the Red Hat Society. Mrs. Sigrist was a member of the Crest Manor Church of the Brethren, where she was a choir member, served as a finance secretary and was past president and treasurer of the Women's Fellowship.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2011 in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St. South Bend, IN. Graveside services and burial will follow in Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
