ELKHART — Joan L. Brayton,86, of Elkhart, met Jesus face to face on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2016 at 8:36 am following a brief illness at Valley View Kindred Nursing Facility of Elkhart, and then reunited with the love of her life, her husband Don, and danced a dance of joy!

She was born in South Bend on Oct. 22, 1930, to the late Joseph and Ida (Heffner) Drake, Sr., and later married Donald G. Brayton on Dec. 10, 1951. He passed away in Elkhart in 2011. She is also preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Drake, Jr. and a sister, Marilyn Drake.

Surviving are sons Russell “Russ”(Toni) Brayton of Elkhart and Robert (Pamala) Brayton of Houston, TX; 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren with another on the way!

Services will be held at Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart on Saturday, Nov, 12, 2016 with viewing beginning at 10:00 am followed by a service at 12:00 noon. A procession will then take Joan’s remains to the St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger for burial there.

Joan was a homemaker most of her life, but she also volunteered as a nurse’s assistant for several years in her youth. She was an avid doll collector and accomplished seamstress; and enjoyed travelling to shows and conventions whenever she could. She especially enjoyed collecting Barbie dolls, and would fashion custom wardrobes for them, all by hand. She also enjoyed making purses, custom adult clothing and decorations.

The family has requested that memorial donations go to the Semper Fi Fund or the Fisher House, both found online.
