Robert S. Gross

Aug. 8, 1931 - Jan. 13, 2014

DELRAY BEACH, FL - Robert S. "Bob" Gross, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away on Monday morning.

Born and raised in South Bend, Bob was the first of two children of Florence and D.D. (Doc) Gross. He was a graduate of John Adams High School followed by graduation from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with a Business degree. Afterword, he served two years in the Army in an IBM unit. He then returned to South Bend and joined his father in the ladies apparel store, Milady Shop. Over the years, they expanded from one downtown location into all major shopping centers and malls. "Mr. Bob" was truly beloved by his dozens of long-tenured employees. He closed the business in 1996 and relocated to Florida shortly thereafter.

He will be dearly missed by his wife of 52 years, Ruth (Marcus) Gross; his daughters, Debbie (Evan) Lister and Nancy (Gary) Drillings; his grandchildren, David, Jonathan, Jocelyn and Jordan; his sister, Carol Zhiss of Encinitas, California; his nephew, Ron Zhiss, and nieces, Terri Begun and Marlene Smith.

Bob was a prominent member of the business community in South Bend. He served as President of the former St. Joseph County Retail Merchant Association and as a Director and President for many years of the South Bend Civic Center Building Authority. He was a Director of the Parking Facilities of South Bend Bonding Authority and a Past President of Temple Beth-El. For fifteen years, he served as a Director of the St. Joseph (later KeyBank) Bank. Bob was an avid golfer, having learned the game as a 9-year-old. Playing for the John Adams team in high school, he scored a hole-in-one. As a passionate Notre Dame fan, he was able to indoctrinate all his grandchildren in this endeavor.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 17, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery, Mishawaka, with Rabbi Eric Siroka officiating. Donations in Bob's memory may be made to Temple Beth-El, 305 W. Madison St., South Bend, IN 46601; to any recognized Cancer organization; or Hospice by the Sea, Boca Raton, FL.
