John Justin Leonhard

Jan. 23, 1930 - Jul. 24, 1953

Second Lieutenant Leonhard was a member of Company G, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in Korea on July 24, 1953.

The following are excerpts from the Ballenger book about Boulder Ciry:

"2nd Lt. John J. Leonard, commander of the company mortar section, was instructed to illuminate the forward hillside immediately on being attacked and to continue to do so until the enemy was repulsed."

"At this point the trench was blocked by the bodies of 2nd Lt. John Leonhard and PFC Patrick "Dumdum" Edmonds. They had been killed only about 20 feet from me, and I never knew that they were even there. They had apparently been killed by Gook soldiers who had gotten into our trenches because neither of them had any weapons....."

Published in the South Bend Tribune on July, 29, 1953 and October 21, 1953.
