Jay A. Smith

Jay A. Smith, age 65 of Fairmount, passed away on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at his residence in Fairmount. Jay was born in Marion to the late Robert and Ellen Arlene (Coleman) Smith on August 20, 1949.
He was a graduate of John Adams High School in South Bend. Starting in 1975, he was a machine operator for railroad company CSX Transportation, where he retired from in 2010 after thirty-five years of service. He was a member of Nelson Street Wesleyan Church in Marion and recently began teaching Sunday school. In addition to his faith, motorcycles were an important part of Jay’s life. He was an eighteen year member of ABATE of Indiana and for the last ten years attended the annual motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota.
Jay is survived by three sons, Harold (Martina) Smith, of Marion, Brian (Angie) Smith, of New Iberia, Louisiana, and Shane (Jennifer) Smith, of Onsted, Michigan; four siblings, Jane Smith, of South Bend, Charles “Chuck” Smith, of Marion, Ed (Sandy) Smith, of Elwood, and Sam Smith, of Fairmount; thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are being entrusted to the Fairmount Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 415 S. Main St., Fairmount, IN 46928. Family and friends may visit the family at the Fairmount Chapel on Monday, November 3 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. The funeral service will be immediately following at the Fairmount Chapel on Monday, November 3 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Steve Fletcher officiating. Committal service and interment will be immediately following at Park Cemetery, Fairmount.
