Melvin  Jerrold Feferman

SOUTH BEND - Mel Feferman, 68, passed away on Wednesday, January 07, 2015, at Memorial Hospital.

Mel was a lifelong resident of South Bend, and for the past several years resided at Ironwood Health and Rehab Center. Often referred to as a “perpetual scholar,” shortly after graduating from John Adams High School, Mel began a 50-year journey of study and learning which continued until his death. A man of vast intellect, Mel was as comfortable on the floor playing board games with children as he was discussing French philosophy over a cup of coffee. His purity of heart, gentle manner, and playful sense of humor,  truly endeared Mel to those who knew and cared for him.

Born into the union of Henry Feferman and Louise Sandock, Mel was preceded in death by both of his parents. Surviving to cherish his memory are his sisters: Rochelle Feferman Roenfeldt of Wichita Falls, TX, Anne Feferman of South Bend, IN, and his brother, Bennett Feferman of Norristown, PA.He is also survived by his loving cousins, Louis and Diane Sandock, who cared for him as a brother.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm today, January 9th, at the McGann Hay, Forest G. Hay Chapel, 435 S. Ironwood Drive in South Bend. Burial will immediately follow at Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery on Jefferson and Logan in Mishawaka. Rabbi Shoshana Feferman will officiate.

The family wishes to thank Mel’s friends and guardians at Real Services who worked to insure Mel’s care and wellbeing. Their efforts helped to provide Mel’s friends and family an opportunity to enjoy their time with Mel and provided for a more meaningful life.
