Cynthia Kay Flanigan

Jun. 7, 1952 - Dec. 20, 1991

Anchorage resident Cynthia Kay Flanigan, 39, died Dec. 20 at home after a long battle with cancer. A visitation was held with a funeral at the Unity Church, Totem and O'Malley roads.

Mrs. Flanigan was born June 4, 1952, in South Bend, Ind., to Glenn and Virginia Heinzman. She attended high school and college in Indiana and earned a teaching degree from Indiana University. In 1971, she was married to Michael Flanigan while both were attending Indiana University. Besides getting her own degree, she helped raise their son, Shawn, born in 1972, and worked at a Job Corps Center to assist her husband in getting his law degree. After college, she moved with her family to Anchorage in 1977. She gave birth to three more children, Bryan, Sierra and Caitlin. Mrs. Flanigan worked for the Montessori School as a teacher, and later at the Alaska Treatment Center and the Alaska Hospital. She also worked as an Alaska Zoo volunteer. Her family said: "She was a loving, caring person, who gave of herself to others all her life."

Mrs. Flanigan is survived by her husband of 20 years, Michael of Anchorage; her children, Shawn, Sierra and Caitlin; her mother, Virginia Heinzman of South Bend; her sister, Carol Dickerson of South Bend; and other relatives and friends.

Arrangements were by Kehl's Forest Lawn Mortuary and Crematory.
