Richard O. Bowman, 65, of Creekwood Drive, South Bend, Ind., died at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30, in his residence.

He was born on Sept. 30, 1934, in South Bend, to Courtney Gustav Luther and Helen Penrod Bowman, both preceding him in death.

On Feb. 15, 1969, in South Bend, he married Yvonne R. Lassen, who survives.

He is also survived by two daughters, Gayle Carpenter of Billings, Mo., and Kim Bowman of South Bend; a son, Rick Bowman of South Bend; two stepdaughters, Dolores Derdak of Carmel, Ind., and Judy Nemeth of Westchester, Pa.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson; three sisters, Beverly Allen of Laguna Beach, Calif., Mary Lou Rothballer of Tampa, Fla., and Dorann Stauffer of South Bend; and by a brother, Robert Bowman of Zephyrhills, Fla.

Richard graduated from John Adams High School and attended Indiana University at South Bend. He was a first aid and CPR instructor for the Red Cross and had worked First Aid Stations as a first aid certified attendant. From 1972 until the present he served on the board of directors of the Red Cross, serving as its treasurer two years and disaster chairman for 16 years, and was the disaster consultant for northern Indiana from 1978 until 1988. He volunteered at Notre Dame sporting events with the Red Cross.

In 1976, Richard attended the World Trade New York City Export Documentation and Traffic Institute. From 1982 until 1986, served at the Michiana Foreign Trade Association as general chairman serving for the Chamber of Commerce, making application and receiving license for the Michiana Foreign Trade Zone No. 125. From 1982 to the present, served as chairman of the First Aid Station program, was president of the South Bend Transportation Club in 1989, and served as its chairman of the board in 1990.

In 1990, he was active with the South Bend/Mishawaka Chamber of Commerce serving on its legislative affairs committee. He was a 30-year member of Hilltop Lutheran Church where he had served as an usher.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 2, in the Hilltop Lutheran Church, 4114 South Ironwood, South Bend, with Rev. Frederick Pfotenhauer officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday in the Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, and on Tuesday in the church one hour before the services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Red Cross, to Hospice of St. Joseph County, to Hilltop Lutheran Church, or to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
