Marquis G. Washington

June 27, 1957 ~ December 13, 2023 (age 66)

Mr. Marquis G. Washington, 66, of Minneapolis, Minnesota passed away on December 13, 2023, in the ER at Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on June 27, 1957, to the union of George Washington and Cora B. (Warren) Washington.  They both preceded him in death.

Marquis attended Franklin Elementary school and John Adams high school in the 1970s in South Bend, Indiana. He accepted Christ at an early age, and attended New Hope Missionary Baptist church, under the leadership of Reverend Williams. Growing up he was the best swimmer in his family. His older nieces and nephews share many fond memories of being tossed around in the water by their uncle “Mike” while spending holidays at Potato Creek Park. His siblings laughed as they told stories about him being the “Captain” of their dad’s speedboat from time to time on their outings along the mighty St. Joe River.

Marquis was employed by the Bendix Corporation in South Bend for more than 10 years. He also worked alongside his father, George, founder of Washington and Sons Handyman services for many years.

Marquis was a very outgoing man, a comedian like his mother, Cora. Affectionately known around the town as “Topflight” back then, he had long silky hair, often corn rolled and dressed in fur coats, and cowboy hats. Marquis loved to help people; he also enjoyed making sandwiches to feed the needy. He was a nurturing man that loved all of his family, especially his daughter Lisa Marie. At one time, he was the caregiver of his late uncle “Buck” and his baby sister Rosetta. Marquis was a big sports fan who loved home cooked meals and loved reminiscing about his mother’s tasty Thanksgiving feast.

In the 90s, Marquis relocated to Minneapolis to help his mother and sister. He once said he’d “found home” after he fished in the Mississippi River and resided in the Twin Cities for more than 25 years. While in Minnesota, he worked for Mervyn’s Department store and as a Sous Chef in Dietary at Abbot Hospital.           Marquis became a well-versed minister of the word of God. He loved to study the bible and would spend time sharing what he learned with his sisters, brothers and others.

Marquis leaves to cherish his memory, a daughter, Lisa Marie Washington, of Indianapolis, Indiana; three grandchildren, Tyonna M. Saines, Charles Saines III, and Charli M. Saines, all of Indianapolis; five sisters, Jodie B. Washington also of Indianapolis, Patricia A. Byrd, Joyce A. Ivey, Rosetta L. Washington, Shaunta  (and James) Burris, all of South Bend; six brothers, Robert Warren of San Diego, California; A. Laplaz Washington of Wabash, Indiana, Cleo (and Marla) Washington of Montgomery, Alabama, Patrick Washington, Christopher Washington, and Courtney (and Angelica) Washington, all of South Bend, along with a host of other family and friends.

Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sisters Jennifer and Laverne Washington.
