Jeanne Marie Weiss (Sergio)

Jeanne Marie Sergio

Sep.23, 1939 - Jan. 1, 2017

Jeanne Marie Sergio, 77, residing in South Bend, passed away peacefully at 6:30pm on Sunday, January 1, 2017 at her residence. She was born September 23, 1939 in South Bend to the late George W. and Lillian A. (Scheid) Weiss. After her father's passing, Jeanne enjoyed many loving years with her step-father, Leo Twigg. She died with the same dignity, grace, and good humor with which she lived every day of her life.

Jeanne was united in marriage with Joseph P. Sergio at St. Joseph Church in South Bend on November 11, 1961. Together they raised a family of six children, John Sergio, Julianne (Steven) Siavelis, James (Kris) Sergio, Jeffery (Alma) Sergio, Joseph Sergio, and Jan (Mike) Weber, by whom she will be greatly missed. First and foremost, Jeanne was a devoted mother and friend to her children, who always came first in her life. This remained true even during her final days, as she continued to be the nurturing mother she always was.

She obtained her nursing degree from St. Joseph Nursing School. She loved being a nurse and spent more than 30 years caring for mothers and their newborns in the Memorial Hospital maternity ward. After retiring from Memorial, Jeanne was adored by the children and parents of the local daycare where she worked part-time.

She was a beloved grandmother to her thirteen grandchildren, who affectionately referred to her as “Ma”: Alexandra, Katherine, Steven, Stephanie, Jacob, Brian, Hunter, Sydney, Justin, Lindsey, Zachary, Maggie, and Tommy. She is also survived by her brother and best friend, John (Mary Beth) Weiss and her sister, Judy Jameson as well as two sister-in-law’s and numerous nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. Jeanne lovingly cared for her husband Joe until his passing on April 25, 2006. She was a good friend and neighbor to the many people who were blessed to cross her path. She could always be counted on for a smile and an encouraging word. She was one of the most positive and happy people that you would ever meet, and lifted the spirits of all she came into contact with. To know her was truly to love her.

A Memorial Mass for Jeanne will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, 2114 E. Jefferson Blvd, South Bend, IN 46617. Rev. David Ruppert will officiate. Friends may visit with the family from 11:00am-12:00pm on January 4, 2017 at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church.
