Richard George Alabaugh

Richard G. "Dick" Alabaugh, 77, of South Bend, Ind., passed away Monday evening, Dec. 22, in Valley View Care Center, Elkhart, Ind.
He was born Jan. 8, 1926, in South Bend, to Walter and Florence Alabaugh. Dick grew up in South Bend where he graduated from Adams High School. He then entered the U.S. Navy, and during that time he attended a year of college. Dick worked for the Navy through Naval Research at Bendix Corporation in South Bend. Transfers took Dick to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and to Michigan where he worked through the University of Michigan. In 1981 Dick retired back to South Bend. He was active for many years with homing pigeons, and enjoyed fishing, golfing and bowling. He belonged to several bowling leagues.
On Jan. 24, 1945, Dick married the former Betty Jean Stegman, who preceded him in death in 1994. Surviving family includes three daughters, Peggy (Gene) Miller of Mishawaka, Judi (Dennis) Bankowski of Barrington, Ill., and Debra Bankowski of Mishawaka, Ind.; a brother, Robert (Phyllis) Alabaugh of Goshen, Ind.; seven grandchildren, Kenneth Kertes, Pamela Zarazee, Brandon Bankowski, Jamie Egendoerfer, Jodi Egendoerfer, Stacy Bankowski and Michael Bankowski; and 10 great-grandchildren.
There will be no public services or visitation.

The Alabaugh family is being served by the Thallemer, Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. Third St., Mishawaka.
