Vernon R. Eck Mar. 2, 1931 - Nov. 5, 2014 MISHAWAKA - Vernon R. Eck, 83, passed away at 4:21 PM Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at the Center for Hospice, South Bend.
Vernon was born on March 2, 1931 in Enid, Oklahoma to the late Anthony and Bertha (McDaniel) Eck. He graduated from South Bend Adams High School and then went to work for the former Studebaker Corporation. In 1967, he accepted employment at I&M (AEP) as a meter electrician, from which he retired in 1993. Vernon is survived by his daughter, Lisa Smith-Eck of South Bend; son, Douglas Eck of Palo Alto, CA; grandchildren, Brittany, Hannah, Chloe, Olivia and Samuel; and a brother, Royce Eck of Goshen.
He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Eck, and two brothers, Anthony and Loren Eck. Vernon's sense of humor was well-known to his family and friends. At the time of his retirement in an excerpt from an I&M newsletter, he made sure to quip that "he especially enjoyed the private retirement party given to me by my friends. The party included a belly dancer named Melania. She was good!"
