Hugh Paul Chalfant

SOUTH BEND - H. Paul Chalfant, 64, of Lubbock, Texas, formerly of South Bend, died at 5:15 p.m. Friday in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, after an illness.
Mr. Chalfant was a professor and chairman of the sociology department at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, and had also taught at Valparaiso University from 1969 to 1971 and at the University of Notre Dame. He was born May 11, 1929, in Wabash, Ind., and moved to Lubbock in 1984.
On Jan. 28, 1966, in South Bend, he married Lois Swihart Keck. She survives with a daughter, Marsha Chalfant of Tampa, Fla.; a son, Craig P. of Torrance, Calif.; three stepdaughters, Karen Keck of Boston, Kathy Keck of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Kristi Keck of Columbus, Ohio; a grandson; and a step-granddaughter. His mother, Irene Chalfant, died April 19.
He received a bachelor's degree from Wooster (Ohio) College, master's degrees from McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, and Oklahoma State University and his doctorate in sociology and anthropology from the University of Notre Dame. He was a member of the American Sociological Association Membership Committee from 1983 to 1989 and authored numerous publications and books.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Sunnyside Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday in Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William St.
