Charles D. Cone

Charles D. Cone, age 85, of Griffith, passed away on Friday June 6, 2014. He is survived by his sister, Gay Jozwiak of Hanna, IN; son, Gregory (Cynthia) Hoover of Griffith; grandchildren: Gregory Hoover, Jr. and Jessica Hoover. Charles was preceded in death by his parents: Willington and Ida Cone; and brother-in-law, Arthur Jozwiak.

Funeral services will be private. Charles attended Ball State Teachers College in Muncie IN. from 1947 to 1951 and received a B.S. in education, majoring in Language Arts and Journalism. He served has an instructor in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953 in Baumholder, Germany. Charles also taught classes in Psychology for the University of Maryland while in Germany. He then attended Roosevelt University in Chicago, IL, from 1964 to 1966 and received an M.A. in counseling and guidance. Also during that time he studied at Gestalt Institute in Evanston, IL in 1964 and received certifications in transactional analysis.

Charles took a post graduate course in Juvenile Delinquency at Indiana University, and a post graduate course in counseling and guidance at Purdue Calumet University. He worked during his years at Ball State in the Human Relations Organization as part of an activist group for Racial Justice. Then he worked for School City of Hammond as a teacher in the Language Arts from 1952- 1965, and from 1965-1995 as a guidance counselor. During his time as a school counselor, Charles often was a guest lecturer in Psychology at Purdue Calumet University from 1976-2004. Also during that time from 1975-1976, he worked at Calumet City Youth Service Bureau in IL as a counselor. From 1992-1995, he joined with the School City of Hammond and Tri City Comprehensive Mental Health as a counselor for "Our House" serving homeless persons in the Hammond area.
