I am still working with groups on issues of diversity, equality and inclusion. I am also researching and writing a history of the Ash(e) family, a story of a family of color who traces their roots back to colonial Virginia and the Carolina Colonies.

Graduated IU in 1965 and entered the Navy as an Ensign in Feb 1966. Deployed to Far East on USS Graffias AF29 for three years. Became CO of a "Swift Boat" in Vietnam. (helped train John Kerry). Left Saigon in 1969 and joined the Coast Guard in the Marine Inspection and Environmental safety program. Served at various duty stations including, NY, Portland, ME, San Juan PR, Norfolk, VA, DC, St Louis, MO and finally as Captain of the Port of Chicago. Retired in 1993 and commenced teaching Navy JROTC at Mooseheart H S (private school run by the Moose Fraternity.) I did professional marine yacht surveys for insurance, prospective buyers etc and consulting on marine casualties and oil spill and chemical response plans. This was what I did while in the Coast Guard. We moved to Bradenton in 2001 where I am mostly retired. I do maintain a practice in the yacht survey business as an Accredited Marine Surveyor and consult around the country on legal cases involving marine accidents. Otherwise, play a lot of golf and put in 5-6 miles a day on my bike. I like to cook too. Specialty is Oriental and Cajun with a dash of down home meatloaf and spaghetti on occasion. 2016: Still doing a little yacht survey, but business has been slow due to the economy. I don't mind as work around the house and golf keep me going. I enjoyed re-connecting at the 50th. Many thanks to Jack and Jim for all your work and especially with the website. As of last December, I fully retired from the marine survey business and gave up my professional credentials. Business had been real slow this past year and I was investing more than taking in. Anyway, the end of an era. Now I have more time for golf, bike trips and leisurely walks on the beach. I got hooked on bread making (the old fashioned way, no machine). That hasn't done anything good for our waistlines!!
