Richard Jude Bast

Jan. 31, 1938 - May 21, 2000

Mr. Richard Jude Bast, 62, of 606 West B Street, Brunswick, died Sunday, May 21 at Suburban Hospital Bethesda. He was the husband of Betty Mack Bast.


Born Jan 31, 1938, in South Bend, Indiana, he was the son of the late Leonard Joseph and Edna Catherine Peters Bast. He was a 1955 graduate of Adams High School, South Bend. After attending two semesters at Notre Dame University, he enrolled at Indiana University, Bloomington, where he graduated.

Upon moving to Washington, he was employed by the CIA, Library of Congress and spent the remainder of his career in the alcohol and drug abuse field. He was most recently employed at the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment in Rockville.

He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Brunswick, and Knights of Columbus. He was a long time resident of Brunswick, and was active for many years in Cub Scouts.

In addition to hie wife, he is survived by twin sons, Gregory Bast and Jeffrey Bast of Waldorf, another son, David Bast of Clinton; four stepsons, Alan Truelove of Safety Harbor, Fla., Andrew Jahnke of Frederick, John Jahnke of Brunswick, and Christopher Jahnke of Lititz, Pa.; one stepdaughter, Kathryn Brigitte Sawicki of Martininsburg, W.Va.; and seven grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Brunswick, Tuesday, May 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday, May 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. The funeral home will be open Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. A Christian wake service will be conducted at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 25, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Brunswick. The Rev. Larry J. Gesy will be the celebrant. Internment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Petersville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Frederick County Chapter, American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1007, Frederick Md. 21701, or St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 113 First Ave. Brunswick, Md. 21716.
