Daniel Clelll Kelver

Daniel C. Kelver

August 27, 1937 - April 14, 2018

SOUTH BEND - Daniel C. Kelver, 80, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, April 14, 2018. Dan was born on August 27, 1937 in South Bend to Homer C. and Mildred A. (Dumont) Kelver. Dan was a 1955 graduate of Adams High School and was a lifelong resident of South Bend. After high school, Dan attended the Indiana Methodist Hospital School of Radiologic Technicians and was employed as an x-ray technician at South Bend X-Ray for over 20 years. Dan went on to work for Sullair in Michigan City, Indiana, until he retired in 1999.

On October 24, 1970, Dan married his loving wife of 44 years, Valerie L. Bruce, who preceded him in death on April 27, 2015. Dan is survived by his daughter, Angela K. (Bryan) Hall of Zionsville, Indiana; his son, Michael B. Kelver of South Bend, Indiana; and five grandchildren, Chloe Hall, Stella Hall, Vivian Hall, Ashton Kelver, and Eliza Kelver. Dan is also survived by his brother, Delbert Kelver; three sisters, Carolyn (Jim) McLean, Rozann Kwasneski, and Maribel (George) Kelver; his sister-in-law, Norrine (Arthur) McCune; and brother-in-law, Norris Bruce.

Dan had a wicked sense of humor and an encyclopedic knowledge of American history. Dan inherited from his father a love of restoring and collecting antique engines, tractors, and farm implements. He spent many summer weekends going to “engine shows” with his (very willing) brother and his (not always quite so willing) wife and kids. He was a member of the Corn Items Collectors Association, St. Joe Valley Old Engine Club of Jones, Michigan, and River Valley Antique Power Association of Three Oaks, Michigan. Dan also served proudly in the Naval Reserves, from which he retired after 20 years of service. Dan was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, and prior to that, St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Dan was very active in his church communities and volunteered for many charitable organizations over the years, including the Center for Hospice Care. Dan spent the last several years of his life at Healthwin Specialized Care, where he made many good friends and where his caretakers treated him as though he was a member of their own family. Dan's family is very grateful to everyone at Healthwin for the wonderful care they gave him. Dan lived an exemplary life - he was hard-working, kind, and unfailingly generous. He was the best husband and father his family could ask for. He will be greatly missed.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive.
