Obituary for Carl Edward Long

Carl Edward Long, age 86, of Rowlett, Texas, passed away on February 8, 2021, after a hard-fought battle with pneumonia with his loving wife and sons by his side. Born in South Bend, IN, he was the son of Carl and Gertrude Long. On March 17, 1960, Carl married Shirley Latham. She survives to cherish over 60 years of memories they built together. In addition to his loving wife, Shirley, Carl is survived by his two sons, Bud (Michelle) and Christopher (Veronica), his grandchildren, Britney, Samantha, Carson, and his great-grandson, Jonah, brother-in-law, Gene Latham (Barbara), nieces Lynda, Tiffany (Chad), Larisa, BeLynn, LeAnn, Brenda, Debbie, Sherie, Tracie (Kurt) and nephew, Tim (Kathy). He was a loving husband, proud father, grandfather, uncle, and friend – a father figure to many. His grandchildren were his absolute joy in life, always their biggest fan and cheerleader.

Known for his near-legendary quick wit and always an optimist, he never met a stranger. He touched many lives with his love of making someone smile or better yet, laugh. He was a man of many endearing names – Sonny, Charisma Carl, Mr. Wonderful, and Mustard Man! Carl loved to play golf, drive his corvettes, and watch his beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish play football. It is fitting that a man of such character, wit, and optimism spent his professional career in sales. The richest part of his career was working side by side with both sons. Carl served his country for two years in the United States Army. He loved to tell everyone that he spent his military years ‘protecting the bars and pubs of Germany’. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for all of the love and prayers on Carl’s behalf. He will be greatly missed.04/05/2021 JFC

James Champaigne (1961)

Carl dated my older sister, Nancy Champaigne in 1955-1956.  In 1960 he offered me his 1969 Corvette for 24 hours on a Saturday night.  I cruised South Bend for at least five hours and returned it to him on sunday.  He advised me to purchase a 1954 Corvette  and then store it for ten years.  In 1964, my brother Jack and I purchased a 1954 Corvette (for $1000) in California and broght it home.  Restoration started and stopped in the 1980's and it was necessary to sell in 1990. Carl was right.  Since only 4200 Corvettes were made in 1954.
