Patsy Ann Hammer residing in Mishawaka, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, May 17th, 2024. Born on July 23rd, 1936 in Biringham, MI to Howard L. and Helen (Clark) Rich. She moved to South Bend in 1948 and resided until her death. She graduated from John Adams High School in South Bend, Class of 1954. She and James raised eight children in River Park, where she lived for 52 years. As she said, her greatest accomplishment was raising her eight children. She loved River Park and made lifelong friendships with her neighbors. She immersed herself in the River Park community. She impacted the lives of several neighborhood children whom she continued to have phone conversations, visits when traveling through South Bend and sending cards throughout her lifetime. She was involved in local politics for years, working the polls and running for local office.  She held “court” on her front porch swing, where all congregated and resolved many “world” issues. She worked later in life at Clothes Closet and the Irish Shop where she developed lifelong friendships. She never knew a stranger and could talk for hours. She enjoyed talking about years past, her family and friends.  She loved her trips to Florida, California, Hawaii, North Carolina (Outer banks) and the road trip out west. She loved nature, birds and her many trips to lake Michigan and the oceans.

 In 1955 in Highland, IN, Patsy was united in marriage to James E. Hammer, whom preceded her in death in 2009. Patricia Suzanne Hammer (daughter) and Heather Hammer (granddaughter) preceded her in death. She is survived by her seven children, Colette (Jim) Russell of Mishawaka, F. James (Michelle) Hammer of South Haven, MI, Mark (Marilyn) Hammer of Osceola, In, Bryan (Marybel) Hammer of Angeles City, Phillipines, Robert (Lisa) Hammer of South Bend, Cheryl (Terry) Stahl and Michael (Alison) Hammer of Mishawaka.

She is also survived by twenty-four grandchildren: Joseph (Mee) Russell, Matthew (Erin) Russell, Carreen (Cedric) Brown, Christopher (Heather) Hammer, Aimee (Ben) Smith, Nick (Chelsea) Hammer, Brooke (Tyler) Bewley, Adam (Anneliese) Hammer, Sarah (Mark) Belardinella, Kelsey Hammer, Bryan Jr, Britney, Gretchen, Christian and James Hammer, Sara Hammer, Robbie (Maria) Hammer, Adam (Kirstin) Stahl, Brandon (Danielle Briney) Stahl, Molly (Mike) Lizzi, Michael, Grace and Nate Hammer. She is survived by thirty-three great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Gary (Nancy) Rich of Berkeley, MI and Robert Rich of Novi, MI. Sister-in-law, Mary Jane Hammer, many nieces and nephews and special friends; Al Henry and family, Sue VanDerbeek, Ross (Dee) Uitdenhowen, Tracy (Joan) Smith, Patty and Jose, and Kathleen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am Friday, May 24th, 2024 at St Monica Catholic Church, Mishawaka. A private burial service at Cedar Grove Cemetery will take place at a later date. The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 8:00 pm Thursday May 23rd, at the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend.

Expressions of sympathy on behalf of Mrs. Hammer may be offered to the Heather Hammer Memorial Scholarship for Marian High School c/o; the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County – 205 W. Jefferson Blvd, Suite 610, South Bend, IN 46601.

Patsy Ann Hammer, 87, of Birmingham, MI, passed away on May 17, 2024 in Mishawaka, IN. Patsy Ann Hammer recently passed away.

She attended John Adams High School in South Bend.

Patsy Ann Hammer worked for Clothes Closet and the Irish Shop.
