In Memory

Gerald Francis Vascil - Class Of 1955

Gerald Francis Vascil

Gerald F. Vascil

August 6, 1936 ~ July 28, 2025

Gerald Francis “Jerry” Vascil was born to Mary Peters and Albert A. Vascil on August 6, 1936, here in South Bend, Indiana the younger brother of Albert A. Vascil (sister-in-law Lois), all deceased.

Jerry started his working career as a newspaper carrier within a 3-mile radius of his home. As a graduate of John Adams High School, he joined the electrical apprenticeship program and in 1957 he married the girl he loved, Betty Lou Tomczak and topped out as a journeyman electrician in 1960. He taught apprentices for 17 years and then later was a part of the examining board. As time passed, he became a member of NECA and president of the Builders Exchange.

Jerry never knew a stranger, loved his family and was very proud of Jerry G. Vascil (Marie), John A. Vascil (Betsy), June Ann Trippel (deceased) and Jill E. With (Tom) along with his grandchildren; Garrett Vascil, Joshua Vascil (Kelsey), Kailey & Courtney Trippel, Thomas G. With (Megan), Michael Vascil (Cristina), and Lauren E. With.

Notre Dame and the Cubs were his top teams and he loved participating with the Irish as part of the Quarterback Club, 3 Point Club, and Tip Off Club…. attending football and basketball games for over 50 years…. meeting wonderful people.

Many may recall Section 22 of the stadium when Jerry would have a friendly banter with the usher when he would call down, “Mr. Usher….do you have any hot chicken noodle soup?” "As it’s pretty cold up here.” Until one day the usher indeed came up with a thermos of chicken noodle soup. The folks looked forward to the banter each year and some years later while at a basketball game, the usher came over with a can of chicken noodle soup…. that remains on our family room table to this day.

Jerry had a new joke to share to whomever would listen and truly loved people. Jerry loved God, gardening and a nice-looking yard, travel, cards, and a Hungarian dish called Cochinyoll. He loved all of his family, cousins and friends, nephews and nieces. How we will miss him!
