 SOUTH BENDRichard L. Carlson, 75, of South Bend, passed away Monday morning in Memorial Hospital. He was born April 20, 1939, in South Bend, to the late Laura Anita (Murphy) and Walter G. Carlson.

On August 26, 1967, in Winchester, KY, he married the former Shirley Barrett, who survives. He is also survived by daughters, Christy Rodgers (Mark), Heather Edds (Kenneth), and son, Ryan R. Carlson (Katie), all of South Bend; three grandchildren, Laura-Jean Edds, Lilly-Anne Edds and Jaxson Carlson; his siblings, Arlene Carlson of Elkhart, IN, Carol Schelbert of Peru, IN, Pamela Bierbaum (James) of Springfield, IL, and Albert Eugene Carlson of South Bend. He was preceded in death by siblings, Mary Alice Carlson, Mary Martha Carlson and Walter Carlson.

Richard retired as Director of Support Services at Hope Rescue Mission after 18 years service. He also worked at Memorial Hospital as a chaplain. He received his BA in Christian Ministry from Cincinnati Bible Seminary and a Masters of Divinity from Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary. He was a member of the Association of Gospel Missions. He enjoyed reading, gardening, was an accomplished woodworker, and loved working as a mechanic.

Richard served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1959 to 1963, serving in Vietnam. In his earlier years he volunteered with his father in the building of Northway Church of Christ in South Bend. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, May 1, 2014, in the West Side Church of Christ, 22987 W. Edison Rd., with Pastor Tom Franklin officiating.

Committal services with military honors will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. Friends may visit with the family in the church today one hour prior to funeral services. Family and friends may leave e-mail condolences at www.welsheimer.com.
