SOUTH BEND - Carolyn Sue (Messmore) Berry, 70, of South Bend, IN passed away at 11:44 PM on Thursday, March 22nd at Millers Merry Manor in New Carlisle, IN after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Carolyn was born on September 15, 1941, in Indianapolis, IN to Donna J. (Brugner) Messmore and Glenn Messmore and was raised in South Bend.

She was a 1959 graduate of John Adams High School.

On February 14, 1992, she married Wilber H. Berry in South Bend, IN, who survives. Carolyn is also survived by her son, Michael (Shannon) Savage of Elkhart, IN; two stepsons, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Berry and Stephen Berry of South Bend, IN; three stepdaughters, Lisa (Dr. Matthew) Hicks of Fort Wayne, IN, Amanda (Bert) Cheney and Keriann (Ted) Mandell, both of South Bend, IN; two sisters, Jan (the late Robert) Hamman and Judy (the late Todd) Cantwell, both of South Bend, IN; one brother, Dennis (the late Carla) Messmore of Warsaw, IN; and two stepsisters, Cheryl Perkette and Paula Powers. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Devynn, Austin, and Reese Savage; one niece and two nephews, Kristen, Kevin, and Kyle of Warsaw, IN; as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, and step-grandchildren.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her mother in March of 1992, her father in May of 2011, and by her stepmother in July of 2009.

"She was a sister, mother, daughter, friend, her time with us has come to an end. We will miss her laugh and her smile, until we meet again in a while. She is with angels that she always loved, now in heaven up above. We love and miss you."

Mrs. Berry worked at Judd Leighton and Associates as a secretary for many years. Carolyn was a very talented and creative individual and enjoyed sewing, needlework, quilting, wood crafting, flower arranging, decorating, gardening, and fishing. She was a great cook and left us with a legacy of her cookbook, "Berry Delicious Cooking", which was published in 1994 in memory of her mother and was also dedicated to her granddaughter Devynn and niece Kristen.

The family request that all memorial contributions be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County located at 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.

Visitation hours will be from 2 PM - 6 PM on Sunday, March 25th, at HANLEY and Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home located at West Ireland Road/State Road 23, South Bend. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 AM Monday, March 26th in the funeral home with Pastor Ervin Mize officiating. Burial is to follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend, IN. The HANLEY & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled arrangements and extends its deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to the Berry Family.
