Alta Lydia (Stock) Swank, born on March 7, 1941, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late Anthony and Eleanor (Pinkert) Stock, has left a lasting legacy of kindness and friendship following her peaceful passing, at the age of 85, on March 20, 2026, in her hometown of South Bend.

Alta graduated from John Adams High School in 1959.

Married to her devoted husband, John E. Swank, Sr. since March 19, 1960, Alta shared a life rich with love and cherished moments. Together, they raised two admired sons, Thomas Swank of South Bend, IN, and John (Sharon) Swank, Jr. of Norridge, IL. Her unwavering support and unconditional love were a beacon of guidance to her five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She will be profoundly missed by her siblings, Ruthann Johnson of South Bend; Rebecca Probst of South Barrington, IL; and David (Sue) Stock of Tennessee. Alta was preceded in death by her brother, Ronald Stock, but the memories shared will continue to provide comfort to all who knew him.

Alta, a selfless and friendly soul, illuminated the lives of those around her through her work as an account assistant in the healthcare field. Her dedication to her profession was paralleled only by her commitment to her family and the community she so loved.

Alta’s life was a portrait of selflessness painted with broad strokes of friendliness, and each encounter with her was a brush with genuine kindness. Her infectious smile and palpable care for others defined a life lived not for herself, but for the well-being of her cherished family and all who crossed her path.

In keeping with Alta’s wishes, no services will be held at this time. Palmer Funeral Home—River Park Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
