In Memory

Joanne Patricia Schrop (Ash) - Class Of 1961

Joanne Patricia Schrop (Ash)

Information from Barbara Lynn Schrop Taylor  JFC

My sister, Joanne, passed away from breast cancer September 9th, 2021. She'd lived in Cincinnati OH since she was twenty. Then when she was diagnosed with cancer, she moved to Columbus to be near her two sons. She passed peacefully with family nearby and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She loved to read and keep abreast of current events and most of all, she loved her family.

Joanne Patricia Schrop Ash

Nov. 5, 1942 - Sep. 9, 2021

Joanne Patricia Ash passed away peacefully on September 9, 2021, at Hilliard Assisted Living in Columbus, Ohio at the age of 78. She was born in South Bend, Indiana on November 5, 1942, to the late George W. and Doris M. Schrop. Prior to graduating from John Adams High School in 1961, Joanne met a dashing young man by the name of John (Jack) P. Woodham. The pair went on to attend Purdue University, where their relationship blossomed, and they married in 1963. Their first son, John, was born in 1964 and they welcomed Mark in 1969. Joanne went on to marry Raymond H. Ash in 1973, sharing the next 40 years, raising a blended family together.

While Joanne briefly worked for the South Bend Tribune and had a modeling career spanning several years, after getting married she focused her energy on raising her children and taking care of family. In her later years, she enjoyed spending time with her grandson, Nicholas. She was especially fond of listening to him play the violin. Religion was a very important part of Joanne's life; she was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Cincinnati, Ohio for over forty years. She enjoyed participating in Bible study groups and keeping in touch with her church friends and family. She was also an avid reader and had a great eye for decorating. Most recently, her focus was on taking care of her beloved Shih Tzu, Benji. While she enjoyed a vibrant social life, Joanne made sure to give back to the community by volunteering at the Daniel Drake Center for Post-Acute Care in Cincinnati for over thirty years.

She is survived by her sons: John and Mark (Michelle), grandson Nicholas, sister Barb (Paul) Taylor, and brother Jim (Chris) Schrop. She will also be dearly missed by her extended family and friends.

The family would like to offer their sincerest gratitude and appreciation to the amazing nurses, aides, and staff at the Hilliard Assisted Living facility. They showed Joanne and our family kindness and support each day in so many ways. We could not imagine going through this journey without their support.

The family will welcome guests for visitation from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM on Saturday, September 25, at Riverview Cemetery, 2300 Portage Avenue, South Bend, Indiana 46616. This will be followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Messiah Lutheran Church, 10416 Bossi Lane, Cincinnati, Ohio 45218, or the OSU James Cancer Hospital, 460 West 10th Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43210.

Barbara,  Joanne and I were not close friends during our time at John Adams, but I remember her smile and bubbly personality.  It would be difficult to be in the same class for all those years and not remember an occasional crossing of the paths.  She was such a cute girl in high school, I'm sure she was an attractive young lady and a beautiful woman.  Based on your comments, I'm sure she had a great personality.  I wish I would have known she was in Cincinnati, and then Columbus.  Akron isn't really all that far away.  We hope you have many friends and family around to share memories, laugh a lot and cry some too.  Her spirit will live on in all of you.  God bless you all as you mourn her loss and celebrate her life.  Another Eagle has flown into the clouds.  G
