Barbara Ann Rems

Mar. 12, 1938 - Sep. 24, 2017

ELKHART - Barbara Ann Rems, 79, of Summerfield, Florida, formerly of Elkhart, passed away at 9:50 a.m. on Sunday, September 24, 2017 surrounded by her family and close friends after many years of battling breast cancer.

Known to her family and friends as Barb, she was born on March 12, 1938 to John and Irene Dooms in Mishawaka, Indiana. On July 25, 1959, she married Dale G. Rems and enjoyed 44 years of love in marriage.

After moving to Florida with Dale in 2000, Barb loved traveling to Texas to visit her daughter and son-in-law, and coming back home to Indiana for reunions with her son and extended family, her St. Bavo classmates and many of her long-time friends. Barb's smile and laugh were as large as her joy for life. She enjoyed golfing, evenings playing dominoes, spending time gardening, and had a natural talent for her interior decorating.

Surviving are her children, Kellie (Steve) Long of Flower Mound, TX and Kevin (Michelle) Rems of Mishawaka, IN; along with her grandchildren, Alexis and Jacob Rems. She was loved also by her grand-fur babies, Angus and Finley Long. Also surviving Barb are her sister, Debbie (Steve) Jackson, and her brother, Kurt (Brenda) Ely.

Preceding Barb in death is her husband, Dale Rems and her parents, John and Irene Dooms.

Per Barb's wishes, there will be a Celebration of Life ceremony held on Friday, October 20, 2017 from 2:00 - 5:00 pm at Luchesse's Restaurant located at 655 CR 17, Suite 9, Elkhart, IN 46516.

After Dale's passing, and with their shared passion for football, education and helping others, Barb established a scholarship fund in Dale's name that is awarded annually to the football student with the highest GPA to help with their college expenses.

In lieu of flowers charitable donations may be made to the Community Foundation of Elkhart County, marked with “Elkhart Memorial Scholarship Foundation (Rems)” or the American Cancer Society.
