Mary Jo (Gassensmith) Wilhelm, of South Bend, passed away at age 86 on Saturday, November 2, 2024. She was born on August 22, 1938, in South Bend, Indiana to the late Norbert and Edna (McCarthy) Gassensmith.
She lived in the South Bend area most of her life and worked for both First National Bank and General Motors. She enjoyed reading and listening to books. Her passion for reading inspired many around her. Singing brought her the most joy, whether it was around the house, family weddings, or singing the National Anthem at baseball games.
Mary Jo was proud of her large family and cherished every moment spent with her siblings, nieces and nephews, and especially her daughter and grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her daughter Renee (Daniel) Jacobs of Springdale, Ohio; two grandchildren Madeline and Eleanor; and one sister Cecilia (Jerry) Florkowski of South Bend, Indiana. She is preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers Norbert “Skip” Gassensmith and Patrick Gassensmith.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 8, 2024 at St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church, 54191 N Ironwood Rd, South Bend, IN 46635. Friends may begin visiting one hour prior at the church. Burial will immediately follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.
