SOUTH BEND - Thomas Roberts Grimes, 68, of South Bend, died Thursday afternoon in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka, after a short illness. Tom owned a telecommunication consulting business in South Bend for 15 years, and then worked for several telecommunication firms and other sales organizations. In 2009 Tom founded the St. Joseph County Tea Party Patriots, and coordinated several bus trips to Washington, DC.

He was born Jan. 29, 1944, in South Bend, to Thomas R. Sr. and Dorothy (Wiedlin) Grimes, who preceded him in death.

On Aug. 26, 1967, in St. Ann's Catholic Church, Joliet, Illinois, he married Sharon Shiffer, who survives along with a sister, Nancy (Walter) Rudge of Granger; mother-in-law, Luella Shiffer of Aurora, IL; sisters-in-law, Cheryl Shiffer (late: Dave), Sue (Al) Forst, Mercia (Ron) Vironda; nephews, Mike (Lori) Rudge, Tim (Amy) Rudge, Kevin (Camille) Rudge, Damon (Erin) Shiffer, Ron (Jill) Vironda, Bob Vironda and Jimmy Revels; nieces, Melody Roberts, Erin (Leroy) Boaden, Gina (Mike) Izzarelli, Marti Shiffer; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Tom was a 1962 graduate of John Adams High School where he was a member of the swim team. He attended his 50-year class reunion in August. He attended Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, former member of Morris Park Country Club, former President and Board member of Unity Church of Peace, Former member of the Downtown South Bend Rotary Club where he achieved 15 years perfect attendance. His hobbies included photography, golf, fishing and traveling.

Services will be held at 7 pm Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, with Rev. Sandie Vanik, pastor of Unity Church of Peace, South Bend, officiating, Friends may call 2 -7 pm Wednesday in the funeral home. Private interment will take place at Cedar Grove Cemetery on the University of Notre Dame campus.
