SOUTH BEND - Richard George O'Neal, 66, of Alpharetta, Georgia,

formerly of South Bend, entered into his heavenly home at 3 a.m.
February 7, 2009, following a brief illness.
Richard was born January

10, 1943 in Chicago, IL, to George and Ruth O'Neal. Most of his life
was spent in South Bend where he graduated from John Adams High
School in the class of 1961. Following graduation, Richard served in
the U.S. Air Force where he became a pioneer in computer technology.

He attended Indiana University and he was the first African American president of the
employee union for Western Electric in South Bend. Richard loved the Lord. His
childhood years were spent as a member of New Salem Baptist Church where he was
baptized at an early age. He was a faithful member of Victory World Church in
Norcross, Georgia at the time of his transition. Richards' other "great love" was his
wife, the former Joan Lowery of South bend. He and Joan were united in Holy
Matrimony on July 27, 1968 and to this union they where blessed with one daughter,
Tracy. Relocating form South Bend to Indianapolis, the couple operated two highly
successful McDonald's franchises. Following the sale of the McDonald's stores, Richard
retired to Alpharetta, Georgia where he remained until his death.
In addition to his

devoted wife, best friend and companion of 40 years, Richard leaves to cherish his
memory a beloved daughter, Tracy O'Neal of South Bend; two grandsons who brought
him great joy, Ty Miles and Trevor Fortune of South Bend; his loving parents, George
and Ruth O'Neal of South Bend; a brother, Michael O'Neal and niece Kimberly, both of
San Diego, California, along with a host of friends and relatives. He was a devoted
husband, doting father and grandfather, successful business man and Christ-centered
servant. Richard was a mentor and friend to many. His hearty laugh, his caring and
giving spirit were his signature, which is now written in the book of life. Services for
Mr. Richard G. O'Neal will be held Saturday, February 14, 2009, in the New Horizons
Outreach Ministry, 56165 Mayflower Road, South Bend. Visitation will begin at noon
