Dick was an extremely popular Geology Professor at Santa Rosa (CA) Junior College. He organized popular class trips to geologicaly significant places such as the Grand Canyon, Snake River Canyon, and similar areas in California and the West. He eventually married one of his former students - Tosya Berg. He died of a pulmonary embolism on October 16, 2016 resulting from the pancreatic cancer he had been fighting for several years.
