SOUTH BEND - Dean A. Tinkel, 69, passed away 9:30 AM Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Dean was born on August 31, 1944, in Mishawaka, IN, to the late Wayne L. and Helen (Huff) Tinkel, and has been a lifelong resident of this area. On April 10, 1965, in Cassopolis, MI, he was united in marriage to Terri (Vietinghoff - Gregg) Tinkel.

Dean served for twenty years with the South Bend Police Department (1967-1987), and 15 years with City of South Bend Legal Department, retiring in 2008. He was a member of the FOP Lodge #36 for 44 years, where he served as Vice President and Secretary.

Dean is survived by his loving wife, Terri Tinkel of 48 years; his son, Daniel G. (Kandee) Tinkel of Mishawaka; two step-granddaughters, Heather (Alex) Cenova and Nicole Block; three step-great-grandchildren, Michael, Isabella and Matthew Cenova; three brothers, Terry L. (Carol) Tinkel of Bostic, NC, Roger W. (Shiela) Tinkel of Plymouth and Keith L. (Joyce) Tinkel of New Carlisle; brother-in-law, Raymond Johanson of Pueblo, CO; and wonderful friend, Scott B. Clark of South Bend.

His sister, Carolyn E. Johanson, and brother, Dale L. Tinkel, both have preceded him in death.

Memorial services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 15, at Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, with Rev. Don Neely officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
