Mickey L. Spainhower, 24, of 815 Carlton St., Mishawaka, was killed instantly early this morning when his car crashed into a tree in front of the Morris Greenhouse, 2105 Mishawaka Ave.

Spainhower died of a crushed chest and severe head injuries, according to Deputy Coroner James McMeel. Cpl. Joseph Markovich reported Spainhower was driving east on Mishawaka Ave. at 4:12 a.m., apparently at a high rate of speed. The car veered right, struck the rear of a parked car and continued across the street before hitting the tree.

Markovich said the car rolled over several times and came to rest on its wheels. Spainhower, he said, was thrown form the auto and was found lying on the ground a few feet from his car.

The fatality brings to 32 the number of  traffic victims in St. Joseph County this year. Mr. Spainhower was born on July 11, 1948 in Mishawaka. On Nov. 13, 1971, he married Debra Zakrowski, who survives along with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Spainhower of South Bend; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Lucy Spainhower of South Bend; his maternal grandfather, John Bayne of Teegarden, Ind.; two brothers, Terry of Mishawaka, and Timothy of South Bend, and two sisters, Mrs. Kathleen Nowacki and Mrs. Deborah Jackey, both of South Bend.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Hollis Funeral Home, South Bend chapel.

Services will be 9 a.m. Monday in St. Casimir’s Catholic Church, Rev. Edgar Szymanski, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park.

Spainhower was a mill operator at Lock Joint Tube Co. He was a member of the Post 360 V.F.W., and a veteran of the Vietnam War.
