Michael Arthur Scheer

SOUTH BEND - Michael A. Scheer, 65, residing in The Villages, FL, passed away at 4:15 a.m. Sunday, January 15, 2012, in The Villages Regional Hospital. He was born in South Bend on July 2, 1946, to the late Edward and Dorothy (Fortier) Scheer.

On September 7, 1968, in South Bend, Michael married the former Sandra L. Payne, who survives in Florida. Michael graduated from Indiana University and later earned a law degree from IUPUI. He started his career in the St. Joseph County Prosecuting Attorney's office from 1977 - 1987. He was later employed by Galucci, Hopkins & Theisen Law Firm in Ft. Wayne. That firm later joined Barnes & Thornburg, where he became a partner and later retired in 2006.

Michael and Sandra moved to The Villages, Florida, in May 2008. He was a volunteer member of the American Veterinary Medical Association - Council of Education. He also volunteered with the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Timothy Catholic Church. Michael also enjoyed golfing, but mostly his family, friends and grandchildren, and was dearly loved by everyone.

In addition to his loving wife, Sandra, Michael is survived by one daughter, Melissa (Robert) Roocroft of Monroe, MI; two sons, Matthew (Autumn) Scheer of Greenwood, IN, and Todd (Kristen) Scheer of Richmond, IN; six grandchildren, Noah, Sophia, Emma, Conner Scheer, and Sarah and Caroline Roocroft. He is also survived by one sister, Margaret (Ken) Schaller of Granger, IN, and his twin brother, Joseph Scheer of The Villages, FL.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2012, in Christ the King Catholic Church, 52473 SR 933 (US 31), South Bend. Graveside services and burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Friday, January 20, 2012, in Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, where a Rosary will be recited at 5:00 p.m.

Mr. Scheer was born in South Bend, Ind., and moved to The Villages in 2008. He started his career as an attorney in 1977 and retired in 2006.

He was a volunteer member of the American Veterinary Medical Association-Council of Education; he was a volunteer with the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Timothy Catholic Church and enjoyed playing golf.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra; daughter, Melissa Roocroft, Monroe, Mich.; sons Matthew, Greenwood, Ind., and Todd, Richmond, Ind.; six grandchildren; his twin brother, Joseph, The Villages; and sister, Margaret Schaller, Granger, Ind.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 52473 SR 933 (U.S. Highway 31), South Bend, Ind. Graveside services and burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.
