In Memory

Virginia Hahn - Class Of 1965

Virginia Hahn

Virginia L. "Ginny" Hahn

Virginia L. Hahn, or "Ginny" as she was lovingly known, passed away on September 18th in Rio Rancho, NM, surrounded by the love and support of her family. Ginny was the daughter of Charles and Mary Hahn. She graduated from John Adams High School in 1965 and then went on to receive a B.S. in Business Management and Administration in 1971 from Indiana University in Bloomington.

Although Ginny spent a large portion of her career working with attorneys, her greatest gifts were shared through her selfless dedication to service. Ginny was best known in the South Bend area for her extensive efforts to help her community where she focused her volunteer work on aiding and empowering women and persons with developmental, physical and cognitive disabilities. She was instrumental in starting the first women's shelter in South Bend, alongside her dear friend, Rolande Parent. Ginny also dedicated a great deal of energy to the YWCA, Children's Dispensary, Very Special Arts, Special Olympics, and the Scholarship Foundation; she was also a longstanding member of the Governor's Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment Council. Most recently, Ginny spent her free time volunteering in New Mexico at Casa Rosa Food Pantry, the Placitas Community Library, and as a reading mentor for elementary school children through the Oasis intergenerational tutoring program.

Above all things in her life, Ginny was most proud of her two daughters, Meredith Rubin and Melanie Knepp. She showed a fierce sense of loyalty to her family with unconditional love that was unparalleled. Nothing in life eclipsed the love she had for her daughters until her two grandsons came into the world. Ginny once said that she finally figured out what she was born to do, and that was to be a grandmother. Erik and Jack brought an immense amount of pride and joy into her life, and they became the center of her world.

Ginny had an unforgettable laugh and a keen sense of humor. She was known for perpetually being in a good mood, her infectious smile, and her ability to humorously give just about anybody a hard time. She loved IU basketball, Notre Dame football, Coca Cola, Elton John concerts, her canine companions and her family. Although she lived in the southwest for the last 25 years of her life, she never strayed too far from her midwestern roots. Ginny was a bright light for many and she will be missed dearly.

There will be no services held; however, the family encourages all who loved Ginny to honor her in their own way. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the YWCA of North Central Indiana (please put SHELTER in the memo). Otherwise, take that trip, go to that concert, do something nice for someone else, tell your family you love them, and enjoy the time you have on this earth. That's what Ginny did.
