Police today are attempting to reconstruct the scene of the accident which claimed the life of 19-year-old Scott Allen Eiler of 1355 Pyle Ave., late Sunday.

According to Sgt. Robert Bejma of the city’s Traffic Bureau, at least 13 witnesses, including passengers in the Eiler car, will be questioned to determine the facts regarding the accident.

Meanwhile, James Davis, 18, 933 S. Ironwood Dr., remains in the intensive care unit at Memorial Hospital where he was admitted following the two-car crash in the 3500 block of S. Michigan St.

Sgt. Bejma declined comment on whether the driver of the third auto is sought. However, he said that “If a third car were indirectly involved, the driver would not be held in connection with the accident.” The traffic officer hinted that the only charges that could be drawn would be a minor traffic violation.

Witnesses told uniformed officers at the scene of the crash that they observed the Eiler car and “a third car” traveling south at a high rate of speed, reportedly involved in a “drag race”.

However, Bejma said this has not been confirmed through, his investigative efforts.

Police said that the second car involved in the fatal collision, driven by Gregory Koczan, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Koczan of 2313 Erskine Blvd., drove east from an off-curb parking lot into the southbound lane, where the two cars collided.

Five persons were admitted to area hospitals as a result of the crash.

In addition to Davis, Charles Caron, 18, of 742 S. 25th, a rider in the Eiler auto; and Miss Barbara A. Koczan, 16, sister of the second motorist, were taken to Memorial. Both Caron and Miss Koczan are in satisfactory condition, hospital spokesmen said.

John Dezmitz, 18 of 918 E. Colfax Ave., also in the Eiler car and Koczan were admitted to St. Joseph’s Hospital for observation. The two teen-agers are in fair condition, hospital aides said.
