Robert W. Darr, 73, of Rue Gauguin, South Bend, Ind., passed away after a brief illness at 7:15 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

Mr. Darr was born on June 25, 1924, in South Bend, the son of the late Dale and Joyce (De Brular) Darr. On March 17, 1947, in South Bend, he married Betty Jean Sowers, who preceded him in death on Jan. 25, 1991. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Verna Jean Craft.

Mr. Darr is survived by a daughter, Sandra (Theodore) Banacka of Niles, Mich.; two sons, Rodger (Virginia) Darr of Batavia, Ill., and Bruce (Nancy) Darr of Mishawaka; four grandchildren, Kimberly and Angela Banacka, and Brian and Julie Darr; a sister, Kathryn J. (Budd) Joy of Granger, Ind; and by a brother, Larry (Rose) Darr of South Bend.

A lifelong resident of the South Bend-Mishawaka area, Mr. Darr grew up in the River Park neighborhood of South Bend, and was a member of the first graduating class of John Adams High School in 1942. Inducted into the Army in 1943, he saw action with the Seventh Army in Europe during its sweep through southern Germany.

A fourth-generation carpenter, Mr. Darr was a self-employed contractor at the time of his retirement in 1989. He was a member of the Coalbush United Methodist Church of Mishawaka.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the Coalbush United Methodist Church, 15977 Jackson Road, Mishawaka, with Rev. James Davison officiating. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Coalbush United Methodist Church, Mishawaka, or to the Diabetes Association of St. Joseph County.
