SOUTH BEND - Ray D. "Bud" Emrick, 82, of South Bend, passed away early Monday morning in Regency Place of South Bend.

He was born on November 12, 1924, in Springfield, OH, to the late Lawrence and Velma (Swank) Emrick, who preceded him in death. On August 11, 1946, he married the love of his life, Eleanor Akre.

Bud served his country proudly as a sergeant in the U.S. Army overseas in Germany in World War II. After receiving an honorable discharge, he continued his education, receiving his master's degree in education from Notre Dame University and became a teacher. Bud spent 17 years teaching and coaching at South Bend Central High School. During his time there, he taught such classes as industrial arts, health and driver's education, and he coached basketball and golf. He was especially proud of being a part of the coaching staff when Central won state titles in both basketball and golf.

When he left Central in 1966, it was to accept head coaching positions for both basketball and golf at South Bend Clay High School. He retired after coaching and teaching for 16 more years at Clay.

Bud was a member of 1st Christian Church of South Bend. He had many hobbies such as fishing and playing cards, but especially loved to golf with the Burke group at Notre Dame.

Bud is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Eleanor Emrick of South Bend; his daughter, Sandy Kaniewski and her husband, Keith of South Bend; his son, Larry Scott Emrick and his wife, Pam of Cassopolis, MI; four grandchildren, Kristen and Lisa Kaniewski, Emily Emrick Reese and her husband, Kent, and Brianna Emrick; and two step-great-grandchildren, Cody and Michael Reese.

Friends may visit with Bud's family on Friday, September 21, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend.
