Service Summary
Joan S. Martin, age 90, of South Bend, entered into eternity on Wednesday, December 31, 2014, in Memorial Hospital. Joan was born October 24, 1924, in South Bend, to LaRue and Carrie Louise (Ryder) Smith. On June 28, 1947, in South Bend, Joan married Frederick W. Martin, who passed awayin 1967, just shy of their 20th anniversary. She was also preceded in death by their daughter, Mary Elizabeth in 1956. Joan is survived by her four daughters, Kathryn A. Wilson (Robert) of Elkhart, Constance M. Evans (John) of Greenville, SC, Margaret M. James of Raleigh, NC, and Rebecca S. Mason of Broomfield, CO; nine grandchildren, John David Evans, Michael Evans, Christopher Evans, Mary Kathryn Mangles, Amy Hurwitz, Sara Kirchhoff, Carrie Kincaid, Laura Hendren and Melissa Wilkie; and 16 greatgrandchildren. Joan was in the first graduating class of John Adams High School, graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Music, and did post-graduate studies at Purdue University. Joan taught piano for many years and impacted countless students and their families. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in South Bend, past officer of United Methodist Women, former Church Choir director and Sunday School teacher, and volunteered many years at the Budget Corner. She was Past Regent of Schuyler Colfax Chapter, DAR, member of Progress Club, Messiah Shrine #10, Order of White Shrine of Jerusalem, Past Matron of South Bend Chapter #2, OES, Past Mother Advisor for South Bend Assembly #1, and Order of the Rainbow for Girls. She was an avid reader, was involved with Presbyterian Players, helped with activities and played the piano for many area nursing homes, led music therapy at the Logan Center, volunteered for the American Cancer Society , and supported St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Gideon's and the Humane Society. Joan dedicated her entire life to teaching and helping others, and for that we are extremely proud. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 5th, 2015, in the Chapel of First United Methodist Church, 333 N. Main Street, with Rev. Mary Hubbard officiating. Burial will follow at Sumption Prairie Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. today, January 4th, at Welsheimer Family Funeral
